Western Nigeria Publica, an independent news organisation, has commenced it's online publication, aimed at redefining news production and publication in Western Nigeria.
The Founder of the Online Media outfit, Mr. Iyanda Ahmed, said the company is set to report events happening within the region.
Ahmed said, "Our mission is to offer news as a product to the public using combination of traditional news values and its strategic principle of reporting what matters on www.westernnigeriapublica.com."
No doubt, the media play a very significant role in keeping everyone updated about the various events around the world. Today, we can check out the latest news and current affairs with just a few clicks or by simply switching on the radio or television, and even newspapers.
A vast majority of people across the globe rely upon various sources of media for keeping themselves abreast on various ongoing issues around the world. As I said, the Western Nigeria Publica is not just a news medium because every news published has its value proposition driven by what the stakeholders or actors in the event or happening that got reported wanted.
As Western Nigeria Publica commences operation in the region, we are committed to sustaining peace and unity by providing the right information, ethical content, giving equal hearings to parties involved, publishing content that are paramount to the people without being biased, and many others.
estern Nigeria Publica, which was launched on 21st of March 2021, had in attendance participants across the globe, including Professional Journalists, Communication Lecturers, students, among others.
The Guest Speaker, Mustapha Muhammed who spoke on, the theme "Redefining News Production in the age of Information Pollution," said 'it is indeed timely and perfect for launching such a media outfit, considering the role that newspaper, especially the online Newspaper plays in the media production of this era of Information pollution and era of advanced technology."
Mustapha Muhammed is an International Communication Expert, a PhD researcher and Assistant Professor of Informational Technologies in Journalism at the RUDN University of Russia.
According to the speaker, the emergence of technology and Social Media has contributed majorly to the distribution of information pollution in the Nigeria Mainstream Media.
He said, "the rate at which information pollution has been causing issues in our society is entirely different. The speed at which it is disrupting our life is entirely different."
Speaking on the challenges faced by journalists and Media Organizations, he said they should know that "they are at war; at war in the sense that they are facing visible and invisible threat"
"The visible threats are the malicious individuals, politicians and those making money online, while the invisible are the innocent individuals with little or no knowledge of what has been written, they cannot identify when the news is not factual."
"Today, it is hard for us to differentiate soft news from hard news, like before where the two can easily be identified."
Therefore, he charged media producers in Nigeria, most especially in Western Nigeria to sit up and know that it is high time they embrace ethical journalism.
Mustapha highlighted three factors every journalist and media producer should pay attention to, he said, Journalists must avoid manipulations and misinformation; traditional news values should be kept by all means; maintaining professionalism regardless of era.
"This is to say that Media Production, in the Information Pollution age, is important for us to pay attention to ethical journalism. If we key into this, we will realize that we can still maintain the trust from people," he stated.
