The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has officially distanced itself from the planned protest by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) against the recent hike in voice call and data plan tariffs.

This declaration was made known during a press conference chaired by the National Vice President of NANS, Comrade Muazu Hinna, and the Director of Campus Watch Zone E, Tabitha Babayo held in Gombe.

Speaking to journalists, the NANS leadership emphasized that while the association acknowledges the economic burden placed on Nigerians due to the price increase, the planned protest does not align with the immediate and pressing concerns of Nigerian students.

According to Comrade Hinna, the student body remains committed to advocating for better educational funding, improved infrastructure, and enhanced security for students nationwide.

NANS further expressed reservations regarding the effectiveness of the NLC protest, stating that mass demonstrations may not necessarily yield the desired results, Instead, the association urged the labour union and other stakeholders to explore diplomatic and constructive means of engagement with the government to address economic grievances.

Meanwhile, the student body raised an urgent alarm over the deplorable condition of roads in the North East, particularly the Numan-Yola-Gombe road, which has become a death trap for students and other travelers.

The association lamented that insecurity, poverty, and lack of infrastructure already plague the NorthEast, and the deteriorating road conditions only worsen the existing challenges, calling on Federal Government, the Federal Ministry of Works, National Assembly and the governors of the Northeast states to take immediate action to repair these roads.

The student body also reaffirmed its commitment to student welfare and urged all Nigerian students to remain focused on their studies while avoiding actions that may compromise their safety.
