The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), today, announced Olakunle Oluomo, the current Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, as the winner of the Ifo 1 constituency election.
The Returning Officer for Ifo State Constituency 1, Prof. Richard Shobayo, declared that Oluomo won by receiving 7,546 votes, defeating his main opponent, Yusuf Ogundele of the Peoples Democratic Party, who received 6,596 votes. A total of 18,378 votes were cast by accredited voters, out of a total of 95,448 registered voters.
The election, which took place on March 18, 2023, was initially declared inconclusive due to overvoting. A supplementary election was subsequently conducted in Polling Unit 4, Ward 1, Ifo Constituency 1, on Saturday, which was won by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with 185 votes, while the All Progressives Congress (APC) received 167 votes.
The APC candidate, who had been leading in the first election by 969 votes, added 185 votes to his total to defeat the PDP, which had initially garnered 6,410 votes, but added 185 votes during the supplementary election, bringing its total to 6,596 votes. The Action Democratic Congress (ADC) came in third, with a total of 3,208 votes.
In response to his victory, Oluomo credited God and the people of Ifo for his success, describing it as a well-fought battle. He promised to provide more dividends of democracy to the people and called on his opponents to put aside their differences and work together to develop the constituency.
