"Vote Not Fight Ogun": Transport unions have been urged to promote peaceful voting, avoid electoral violence in the lead-up to the 2023 elections

As the 2023 general elections draw near,  "Vote Not Fight Ogun" has reached out to representatives from The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Riders and Owners Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN) to advocate for peaceful electoral processes and to discourage vote buying and electoral violence in the state.

Others include Articulate Motorcycles Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (AMORAN), Riders and Owners of Motorcycle Organizations (ROMO), and Tricycle Owners and Riders Association Of Nigeria (TORAN). 

The VNF Ogun East Senatorial District coordinator, Blessing Oluwagbewesa, emphasized the importance of transport unions in promoting peaceful elections and urged eligible voters to collect their voter cards from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in a timely manner. 

She made the call at the Intergenerational Community Dialogue against Electoral Violence and Vote Buying with the transport unions and youth leaders in Ogun East Senatorial District, Ilisan Remo, Ogun State.

Blessing said, “as individuals and groups, we must never allow the incessant inglorious vote selling and buying at this year’s elections.”

“Today, the 2023 general elections are fast approaching. So, the Vote Not Fight Ogun is launching  the Good Voices Against Electoral Violence Campaign in Ogun East Senatorial District, Ilisan Remo,  with a view to sensitising the members of the unions to promote peaceful electoral processes,” she said.

Adebiyi Sodiq, a member of the state VNF steering committee who spoke at the event, advised youths in the state to channel their energy to building a better life and society.

He stressed on the need to re-orientate and re-conscientise the minds of the Nigerian youths to shun all forms of electoral violence in the state and country in the forthcoming election.

Also speaking, Adetola Oremosu called on the representatives to be committed to their obligations to the union and to sit-up to their responsibilities towards Society.

The representatives of the transport unions expressed their commitment to fair and peaceful elections and stated that they will not impose any political candidates on their members. They also highlighted that they have taken measures to address electoral malpractice and anyone caught or reported to be involved will face the law.

The representatives of the transport unions, including Mr. Sakirudeen Aliu for NURTW, Mr. Asaye Olusegun for ACOMORAN, Mr. Adenike Oludapo for ROMO, and Mr. Onabajo Damilola for TORAN, pledged to inform their union members about the VNF campaign.
