Adeyemi College of Education Students' Union Government has appealed to the institution's management to reconsider the ban of students from driving cars and riding power bikes on campus.
The President of Adeyemi- SUG, Ayoola Olamilekan Joshua Popularly known as Baba Ipaye, made the appeal while speaking with Western Nigeria Publica.
It would be recalled that the Registrar of the college, Mrs Olufisayo Fakorede, in a circular dated April 15, said the ban was necessary to safeguard the lives of students and staff from those who drove recklessly.
Fakorede said the management had received several complaints from students and staff of the institution over the recklessness by some of the students which necessitated the ban.
“The college management has observed that students who own cars and power bikes drive their cars and ride their power bikes on campus with reckless abandon.
The SUG President said that the management should review the ban, adding that there are ways to address issues like this.
"We understand the welfarism of our students is paramount, but of course, there are other ways that we can actually manage the situation."
For instance, in a larger society where accidents occur, does that mean that cars would be banned from the highway? Rather, the government finds alternative solutions to reducing accidents on the road," he added.
According to the SUG President, not only students park cars recklessly on campus, "but then, we have seen situations where lecturers park their cars recklessly on campus too."
"This is not a student thing, it is a general thing that is common to every individuals on the campus."
He said that the union being the voice of the entire Adeyemi students had been gravely disturbed by the ban, adding that the ban would cause more harm than good. "If they are banning cars, we are adding more to their(students) suffering. We have seen so many times when students are sick, students' cars are used in rescuing them."
He said that the union would continuously engage the necessary parties to actualise a reversal of the ban.
"The union understands the reason why students are banned from using cars and power bikes on campus, but we are pleading to the authorities to review the ban.
“We want the general public, especially the students, to shun any form of protests and unwarranted dialogue without the presence of the student union leadership.
“Adeyemi-SUG being a progressive union, admires the tranquility and serenity enjoyed so far on campus and enjoins the college management and to react swiftly to our appeal,”
Similarly, a 300level Mathematics student, Adesigba Folasade said using cars on campus ease the stress of going late to the examination hall.
She pleaded with the school management to reconsider some of these factors in order to make things easy for the students and the entire staff.
