In a remarkable display of environmental commitment, 14 First Ladies representing the Northern Governors Wives Forum (NGWF)  in collaboration with the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) flagged off Tree Planting Campaign in Gombe.

The project, which was launched at the Government Girls’ Mega College Doma in Gombe,  was spearheaded by Hajiya Asma’u Inuwa Yahaya, the First Lady of Gombe state and Chairperson of the Northern Governors' Wives Forum, emphasized the symbolic and practical significance of tree planting.

She stressed the theme of the campaign, "Greening for Food and Shelter," highlighting the vital role trees play in providing sustenance, shade, habitat, and enhancing landscape aesthetics.

Expressing concern over the vulnerability of the northern region to land degradation, Hajiya Asma’u reiterated the commitment of the First Ladies to contribute to the restoration of degraded land. Their efforts align with the ACReSAL Project, which aims to restore one million hectares of degraded land in the region by 2030, in accordance with the federal government's broader plan.

Commending Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya's previous efforts in tree planting through the 3G project, the First Lady emphasized the importance of individual responsibility in tree planting and conservation to combat deforestation and land degradation.

The event also saw participation from key state officials, including Prof. Aishatu Umar Maigari, the Gombe state commissioner of Education, who highlighted the establishment of forest and climate change clubs in schools to address climate change impacts. Dr. Barnabas Malle, the Commissioner of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, and Cooperative, praised the collaborative efforts of the First Ladies in complementing the state government's climate actions.

Dr. Sani Adamu Jauro, the Gombe State ACReSAL Project Coordinator, extended gratitude to Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for his support and emphasized the importance of collective action. He urged all 19 First Ladies from ACReSAL states to follow the exemplary lead of Gombe state and actively support the project for the benefit of all.
