Residents of Gombe State have been called upon to play a vital role in reviving grassroots sports as a tool for empowering the younger generation.

This passionate call was made by renowned sports expert and Chairman of the Green White Green Sports Center, Ahmad Shuaibu Gara-Gombe, during the grand kickoff of the Gombe State Principals Cup Football Competition for Secondary Schools and the Inter-Secondary School Athletics Competition at the Pantami Township Stadium in Gombe.

Speaking at the event, Gara-Gombe, who also serves as Chairman of the Gombe State Athletics Association, highlighted the critical need to equip young talents with foundational sports skills to prepare them for both local and national representation.

He expressed optimism that these efforts would not only boost sports development in Gombe State but also contribute significantly to Nigeria's overall sporting achievements.

In a groundbreaking move, Gara-Gombe pledged to handpick the top-performing participants from the competitions, enroll them in his sports academy, and cover their educational and living expenses entirely as he did to the top athletes from the previous Inter-Primary Schools Athletics Competition.

He also called on sports enthusiasts and stakeholders across Nigeria to support the initiative by mentoring young athletes and providing platforms for them to showcase their talents to the world.

Gara-Gombe revealed plans for an upcoming Gombe State Inter-Tertiary Institutions Sports Competition, aimed at expanding the initiative to focus on training athletes and footballers to meet international standards while providing opportunities for them to attract global sports organizations.

He commended the Commissioner for Gombe State Ministry of Education, Dr. Aishatu Umar Maigari, for her unwavering support and commitment to youth development through sports.

The kickoff event saw a remarkable turnout of dignitaries, including top sports experts from Lagos, Kano, and Abuja, who commended the Green White Green Sports Center for spearheading such an impactful project.

To crown the launch, an intense football match between Savannah Group of Schools and Government Junior Secondary School Pilot set the tone for the competition, where Savannah Group of Schools clinched a narrow 1–0 victory in the second half, signaling the start of what promises to be an exciting tournament.

With this initiative, Gombe State is setting the pace for grassroots sports development in Nigeria, offering hope for a brighter future for the nation’s young athletes.
