In line with the resolve of Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC) in actualizing the Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs 4&5(Quality Education and Gender Equality), stakeholders at all levels have been urged to prioritise commitment to protecting the rights of girls in Nigeria in order to help maximise their immediate and long-term potentials.
The Call was made at the 2024 International Day of the Girl child event organized by Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC) RS2.114 Isolo Unit Command, in collaboration with RS2.110 Lagos Airport Unit Command, held on 11th October, 2024 at Oshodi-Isolo local government area legislative hall, Lagos.
In his welcome address, the FRSC Isolo Unit Commendar, Chief Route Commander Uko O Uko, maintained that investing and empowering young girls would make them reach their full potential.
Uko said, “The International Day of the Girl Child focuses attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights. The Commands’ notion was that when a girl child is properly educated, the enlightenment will reduce the propensity to be exposed to Road Traffic Crashes (RTC) as they will know the right safety ethics to apply.”
“As we celebrate the girl child today, we join the rest of the world to raise awareness about gender inequality and to advocate for girls’ rights and empowerment, while focusing on the essence of addressing the challenges girls and young women face and ensuring their human rights are fulfilled.
“We fully align with this year’s theme as selected by UNICEF: ‘ Girls’ vision for the future,’ which underscores the need for urgent action, persistent hope, driven by the power of girls’ voices and vision for the future.
“Many girls are denied opportunities due to climatic considerations, conflict, poverty, and gender equality. However, research has proven that girls are not only brave in the face of crisis but hopeful for the future.”
Uko noted that girls, on a daily basis, are taking deliberate steps and actions to realize a vision of the world in which all girls are protected, respected and empowered, adding that the girl child cannot achieve this vision alone without considerable support from relevant bodies and organizations.
“It is time to listen to girls, to invest in proven solutions that will accelerate progress towards a future in which every girl can fulfil potential. I am optimistic that with your individual and collective intervention and collaboration, we will achieve this vision,” Uko added.
Speaking further, the Unit Commander, noted that Federal Road Safety Corps as a world class organization (ISO9001-2015) is at the forefront of ensuring the actualization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adding that “this event aligns with goals 4 and 5: Quality Education and Gender Equality respectively. When a girl child is properly educated, the enlightenment will reduce the propensity to be exposed to Road Traffic Crashes (RTC) as they will know the right safety ethics to apply. Remember, only the living celebrate and be great in life.”
“The Corps is employing more women in consonance to the 35% Affirmative Action of women in public governance/leadership; more women are also being appointed as Commanding Officers across the nation.”
He, therefore, called for individual and collective intervention and collaboration; noting that this is time to listen to girls and invest in proven solutions that will accelerate progress towards a future in which every girl can fulfil potential.
