Akintunde Abdulraheem, a Mass Communication Lecturer at Fountain University Osogbo, on Saturday, emphasized the importance of solution-based reporting and professionalism in journalism during a virtual onboarding webinar for Western Nigeria Publica Volunteers, an online newspaper.

During the webinar, which centered around the theme of "Reporting what matters in an emerging multicentred world," Akintunde encouraged the volunteers to uphold the ethics of the profession and prioritize social responsibility in their reporting.

He also encouraged the volunteers to conduct thorough research and report stories in an accurate and fair manner.

"Journalism entails accurately and fairly presenting facts and fulfilling a social responsibility to inform and shape society,"he said.

The Mass Communication lecturer advised the volunteers that they should not be discouraged by the potential challenges they may encounter in their work. "Let's be upright and work inline with journalism ethics," he added.

On his part, Co-Founder of Infoprations Limited, Lagos, Nigeria,  Mr. Mutiu Iyanda, urged the volunteers to focus on finding solutions to problems in their reporting and to use a project approach in creating news.

Mutiu said that journalists should do more stories on what people were doing to solve the problems affecting them and use such stories to call the government’s attention to their plights, adding that  problem-focused stories do not usually bring solutions or responses from the government.

The Publisher of Western Nigeria Publica, Ahmed Iyanda, expressed his appreciation to the guest speakers and officially welcomed the volunteers to the team.
