The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has cautioned passengers against embarking on night journeys during yuletide season due to its negative consequences.
Chief Route Commandar, Uko O. Uko, Unit Commandar, FRSC, Isolo Unit Command, Lagos State, issued the warning during an exclusive interview with Western Nigeria Publica.
According to him, the corps have the mandate to take measures that will help to minimise road crashes before, during and after yuletide season.
"One of the measures is that we encourage people to stop or minimize night travels. "Motorists should desist from traveling at night and reduce their speed to reduce carnage on the highway,” he said.
“This is because when a motorist is driving at night, he cannot see beyond the reach of the vehicle’s light.
“In case of an accident, sometimes helpers are not readily available or it takes time to get those who will assist,” he added.
The Chief Route Commandar further urged road users to prioritise safety as they ply the road before, during and after the yuletide.
He enjoined passengers to caution any erring driver, saying passengers can call the FRSC toll line to give the details of vehicles so that such vehicles could be apprehended.
Speaking further, Uko warned motorists to be patient and drive within prescribed limits, saying it’s inappropriate for transporters to use the yuletide period to maximise profit through overloading, thereby putting the lives of road users at risk.
"This is a wake-up call to remind road users to be careful this period as there is usually an upsurge in the number of people and vehicles on the road.
“It is on this note that motorists should drive within the prescribed speed limit and they must be conscious enough to avoid reckless driving and also carry out maintenance on their vehicles before putting them on the road,” he added.
