Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, has restated his administration’s unwavering commitment to media freedom and partnership, as he received the National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Alhassan Yahya, at the Government House.
In a statement issued after the high-level courtesy visit, Governor Inuwa Yahaya was lauded by the NUJ President for his consistent support to the journalism profession and his people-focused governance style.
The visit is part of the NUJ’s efforts to strengthen collaboration with key stakeholders in the media-development space.
The Governor described Comrade Alhassan’s emergence as NUJ President as a product of purposeful leadership and visionary drive, pledging full support to the Union’s national agenda, particularly efforts aimed at entrenching professionalism, press freedom, and responsible journalism.
Governor Yahaya further assured that his administration will expedite work on the completion of a befitting NUJ State Secretariat in Gombe, while also promising logistical support to national and local media organisations operating within the state.
While expressing deep appreciation for the ‘Media-Friendly Governor Award’ conferred on him during the NUJ’s 70th Anniversary in Abuja, the Governor said the recognition would serve as a further push to uphold transparency, accountability, and open governance.
On his part, NUJ President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, attributed his electoral success to the unwavering support of Governor Inuwa Yahaya and the goodwill from the Gombe media community.
He praised the Governor for fulfilling his campaign promises, especially in the health sector, which he described as a priority area for the Union.
Comrade Alhassan revealed plans to recommend Gombe as host for an upcoming National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the NUJ and reiterated the Union’s commitment to amplifying the role of journalists in peace-building, national unity, and security.
He also briefed the Governor on recent strategic engagements with national leaders, including the National Security Adviser and the Senate President, underscoring the Union’s resolve to position journalism as a force for national cohesion and democratic strength.
