Fact Check: Did Ghanaians Really Protest the Installation of an Igbo Monarch?

There have been recent speculations regarding the installation of an Igbo traditional ruler, Eze Chukwudi, to oversee the Igbo community in Ghana

Claim:
A viral video shared by X user @AsakyGRN on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, claimed that Ghanaians were protesting the installation of an Igbo traditional ruler, Eze Chukwudi, over the Igbo community in Ghana.

The 47-second video shows a crowd attempting to storm a compound, blocked by police officers. The user captioned it:

“Ghanaian youths protest against Igbo dominance after the Igbos installed an Igbo king in Ghana.”

The video quickly gained traction, amassing over 1.8 million views, 10,000 likes, and hundreds of reposts, quotes, and comments—some of which reinforced ethnic stereotypes, while a few users questioned the claim’s authenticity.

Verification:

Fact-checking by WNP revealed that the video is misleading and unrelated to any installation of an Igbo ruler.

Using Google Reverse Image Search, the clip was traced to a  longer version shared on May 30, 2025, by Onua 95.1FM, an Accra-based radio station. The video was captioned:

“Wontumi Arrest: Tensions rise as NPP supporters push back against police barrier.”

Additional evidence surfaced from Tv3_ghana on Instagram and 3FM 92.7 on YouTube, confirming that the video depicts supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) protesting the detention of Bernard Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi) at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra—not a protest against any Igbo installation.

News reports published on May 30, 2025, corroborate that NPP supporters had taken to the streets in response to Wontumi's detention.

Conclusion:

The viral video has no connection to any Igbo king or protest against the Igbo community in Ghana. It was misrepresented on social media and originally captured a political protest unrelated to ethnicity.

Verdict: ❌ False – The claim is misleading and unrelated to the Igbo community.
