The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has denied widespread claims that the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) has been cancelled, describing the report as false, misleading, and the work of "mischief-makers."
The false announcement, which circulated widely across social media on Saturday, July 19, 2025, alleged that the Federal Ministry of Education, in collaboration with WAEC, had cancelled the entire 2025 WASSCE over incidents of mass examination malpractice, including coordinated question leaks and unauthorized digital sharing of exam materials.
In a swift rebuttal issued on Sunday, July 20, 2025, WAEC, through its Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, dismissed the claims as entirely untrue.
The said examination has not been cancelled,” the Council stated.
WAEC noted that while the origin of the fake statement remains unclear, it is believed to be the work of individuals seeking to tarnish the Council’s image and create unnecessary panic among students and parents.
“The Council is certain that the false claim is being peddled by mischief-makers who are bent on bringing the Council to disrepute and causing confusion and panic among candidates who sat the examination,” the statement read.
WAEC further assured the public that marking of scripts has been concluded, and results will be released on or before Thursday, August 4, 2025, as scheduled.
The Council also reminded the public that all official updates are communicated only through its verified social media accounts, accredited media outlets, and the Public Affairs Department.
“We therefore urge our stakeholders and the general public to disregard the said publication,” the statement concluded.
