A 20-year First class graduate and a corps member, Bilqees Lawal has brought great joy to the people of Kpong community in Khana LGA, Rivers State by drilling a borehole in his host village.

Bilqees,  who just completed her service year, commissioned the borehole on February 7, 2022 amidst celebration.

Kpong community home to 5,000 people is a remote community where its dwellers have for years lived in poor conditions that included them getting drinking water from a river that is contaminated with feces and other waste materials.

Speaking at the commissioning of the borehole, Bilqees said she found out that the villagers' source of water is a dirty river contaminated with feces, hence the reason for taking the responsibility to ensure that the community have access to clean water.

Bilqees told Western Nigeria Publica that the decision to drill a borehole in the community was motivated by the plight of the villagers in search of potable water.

The NYSC State Coordinator George Mfongang represented by the Assistant Director Core Discipline and Reward Mr  Adebowale Ogunfidodo, while  commissioning the project said that the joy expressed by the villagers knew no bounds. He explained that the NYSC Community Development Service (CDS) programme is aimed at improving the living conditions of rural community dwellers.

"Today is one of the happiest days since I assumed office as chairman of this local government. I am saying this with so much sense of responsibility, reason being that what we have come here to do today is very uncommon.

Thomas noted that the gesture by the promising young lady has glaringly demonstrated some of the cardinal objectives of the NYSC programme which are building national integration and patriotism among the youths.

Earlier, the former corps member recalled that she almost gave up on the project at a point for lack of funds but commended the dexterity of her sponsors, NYSC, among others who kept encouraging her at every point until the vision was realized.

Some members of the community thanked the ex corps member for her relentless efforts on the realization of the project.
