Nationwide Blackout as Power Grid Collapses

The national power grid suffered a collapse on Wednesday, plunging parts of the country into blackout.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the incident in a public notice issued via its official X handle on September 10, 2025.

According to AEDC, the outage was caused by a total loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 a.m., disrupting electricity supply across its franchise areas.

The notice read: “Please be informed that the power outage currently being experienced is due to a loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 a.m. today, affecting electricity supply across our franchise areas.”

The company, however, assured the public that work was ongoing to restore the grid.

It added, “Rest assured, we are working closely with the relevant stakeholders to ensure power is
restored once the grid is stabilised.

“Thank you for your patience and understanding. For further updates or inquiries, call: 08039070070.
WhatsApp: 08152141414, 08152151515. Thank you.”

In 2024 alone, the national grid collapsed 12 times, adding to over 100 incidents recorded in the past decade.

Earlier this year, in February, another collapse plunged many Nigerians into darkness.

Amid the recurring outages, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in April granted approval to six firms and one private university to generate and distribute electricity independently.

However, in its July 2025 report, NERC maintained that the grid experienced no collapse or disturbance in the first quarter of 2025.

The report stated: “There was no incidence of system disturbance on the national grid in 2025/Q1.”
