Chelsea FC etched their name in the history books once again with a commanding 3-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the final of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
The Blues delivered a flawless first-half performance, overwhelming the Champions League winners with three goals before the break. Cole Palmer was the star of the night, netting a brace and assisting João Pedro for the third, effectively putting the game out of PSG’s reach within 43 minutes.
It was a shocking turn of events for the French side, who had come into the final as favourites after thrashing Real Madrid 4-0 in the semi-finals. But where PSG had dominated in the last round, they were undone early this time as Chelsea seized control with clinical precision.
The match drew global attention, even catching the presence of U.S. President Donald Trump in the stands. However, the night belonged to Chelsea, who became the first English club to win the Club World Cup twice — their previous triumph coming in 2021.
Things went from bad to worse for PSG late on, as midfielder João Neves received a red card following a VAR review for an off-the-ball incident involving Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella.
Chelsea's victory capped a remarkable season, having already lifted the UEFA Conference League and secured a fourth-place finish in the Premier League. With the expanded 32-team format making its debut this year, Chelsea have the distinction of being the first winners under the new system.
The triumph also comes with a financial windfall — approximately $125 million in prize money — softening the impact of a shortened summer break for the squad.
For PSG, the loss will sting despite having already clinched the Ligue 1 title, French Cup, and their long-sought Champions League trophy. While the Club World Cup eluded them, their primary objective for the season was achieved. Luis Enrique’s side now turn their focus to the UEFA Super Cup clash against Tottenham Hotspur in a month’s time.
